Jutka and everybody else:
Hi, I was reading this thread. In the previous pages there are posts concerning Russian people and Russian lifestyle vs. NorthAmerican. I was referring to those posts... they wrote about how Americans are self-centered individuals, and superficial. |

I wouldn't say that they are all arrogant and self-centered, but I think it's all relative. Us Europeans (at least East Europeans) are used to more friendliness, openness, and warmth. Or just a different kind of friendliness. My Hungarian friend (I am Hungarian too) who just moved here to Canada has told me that she was very disappointed with people here when it came to friendliness. For example, other students in her classes, who talk to her in class, totally ignore her when they see her on the street! It is very strange, because this girl is very nice and sweet. Maybe that's the kind of thing Europeans notice in North America.

Hi Jutka
definitely. I am not saying that I haven't noticed this in Europe, but I noticed a lot of double-faced individuals, they have no respect or manners. Some of them couldn't care less about you, which is different from a small village in Italy, for instance. People know who you are, evenif they would they want to, they can't really ignore you. However, I have found some nasty people over there too... Sometimes I blame it on the people that I was so lonely for 4 years in college, but obviously it was ridiculous for me to expect that people would be the same as at home. I just didn't think Americans were that way, until I actually came and lived here. I had a much more naive view of how Americans are--I thought they would be much more available to help out... because that's who I was...I was compassionate of everybody, however, this has changed quite a bit. I am not as compassionate anymore because I realized when I was like that, that people would start actually taking advantage or making fun or whatever... now I know why people are so isolated here--you can't really trust many people, this society is big and diverse, people develop fears of being themselves for fear maybe of judgement...I am guessing... Goodnight everyone |
