12 But when the chief priests and the elders brought charges against him, he did not answer.
13 Then Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear the charges they are bringing against you?"
14 But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge. The governor was really amazed.
15 It was the governor's practice at the Passover Feast to let one prisoner go free. The people could choose the one they wanted.
16 At that time they had a well known prisoner named Barabbas.
17 So when the crowd gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which one do you want me to set free? Barabbas? Or Jesus who is called Christ?"
18 Pilate knew that the leaders were jealous. He knew this was why they had handed Jesus over to him.
19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him a message. It said, "Don't have anything to do with that man. He is not guilty. I have suffered a great deal in a dream today because of him."
20 But the chief priests and the elders talked the crowd into asking for Barabbas and having Jesus put to death.
21 "Which of the two do you want me to set free?" asked the governor. "Barabbas," they answered.
22 "Then what should I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" Pilate asked. They all answered, "Crucify him!"
23 "Why? What wrong has he done?" asked Pilate. But they shouted even louder, "Crucify him!"
24 Pilate saw that he wasn't getting anywhere. Instead, the crowd was starting to get angry. So he took water and washed his hands in front of them. "I am not guilty of this man's death," he said. "You are accountable for that!"
25 All the people answered, "We and our children will accept the guilt for his death!"
Matthew 27

LillaLila, did you notice that the dialogue of verse 25 was taken out of the movie? The high priest moves his lips, but the words were deleted. Gibson was receiving some real heat at that time being called anti-semetic. He tried his best to make everyone happy, and yet still be true to the message.

I wasn't there, but there are no accounts of ANY Romans being there at his arrest and first trial.

I should have been more specific, Andrew. I should have said 'some of the Jews' instead of 'the Jews'. Sorry.

Exclamation what we should learn

i have seen the film in egypt and sure i saw the teers of many morae including me offcourse but we should know some thing important ...god do all of that not because he did something wrong but he passed on all of this violent reactionjust for everyone of us ..every one? ! even the jewish? even the others? no... big no but for everyone believe that he is the master he is the god he is everything in our live he is our leader and he is the man who will survive us at the end .
without that we lose the meaning of the passion of the crest without that we lose the great meaning of this film.
and about the jewish media i think they are so stupid because they don't read the bible right or they should read the master's word on the cross when he asked the father to forgive them all because they don't know what they are doing so he give them a cerification of innocence . from this bloody crime .
after we saw the film we have to make do the change that should happened in our solves and try to don't waste our time againe insomething poor without a soul value .
what is the value of all of these technology arround us with an empty soul? it will be a weapon aginest us .
try to make the film do his effct in your soul a man without any mistake and has the ability to change everything on his side and he apply to die on the cross just for his believers because this was the only way to erase our mistakes forever and what if you know that this man was the god the son and the master said befor who se the son so he see the father who sent the son this is a great thing to touch our tears with fingers but what is the result this is not a romantic film such as titanic but this should be a leason for everyone of us christian or jewish.

god bless you all

My take on the Passion of Christ

Mel did not intend to produce a documentary on Christ's suffering and death but rather a historically based artistic picture of these events,
emphasizing their spiritual and theological value.
He has repeatedly stated that The Passion of the Christ reflects his personal vision of the passion and not the only possible vision.

The centuries-old devotional exercise of retracing the Stations of the Cross likewise proposes for the meditation of the faithful different scenes from the four Gospel narratives as well as from Catholic traditions. Such as for instance, of Veronica's cloth and Jesus' falls along the Via Dolorosa, which Mel also included in the film.

The Vatican Council document states:
"Even though the Jewish authorities and those who followed their lead pressed for the death of Christ, neither all Jews indiscriminately at that time nor Jews today can be charged with the crimes committed during his passion" (Nostra Ætate, 4).

Mel embraces that teaching wholeheartedly and has repeatedly stated his belief that the sins of all mankind are responsible for Christ's suffering and death, his own in the first place. He even chose to be filmed holding the nail driven into Jesus' hand as a reminder of his own part in Jesus' passion.

1 Corinthians 22-23
1 Corinthians 1:18

Complaints concerning the languages spoken, the height of the cross, the length of Jesus' hair, the size of the crowd in Pilate's praetorium and the placement of the nails in Jesus' hands and the "potrayal of Jews being the murderers" seem strangely trivial in the face of the larger message of the film.
I personally find his critics doing nothing more than to sling mud at him for being Catholic and i believe he too expected it.

Where were the ADL and the Fundamentalists with their "defamation" charges when The Last Temptation of Christ was released on broadway?
I guess that was "ok" for them because it depicted Christ in a blasphemous, indecent or obscene manner and considered it a work of "art" but subject Mel's film to scrutiny in efforts to find fault with his depiction of Christ's passion and death, simply because it was historic and potrayed everyone (Yes, that includes YOU and I) as taking part in His death?
