Exclamation

Not long ago , as in the western churches, but now many have died for Christ. Not long before the Russianm revalution, Russia was kknown far and wide as Holy Russia. This was because the people of Russia ,from the peasant to the palace the people of Russia were by far the most devout people in the world. It was an orthodox priest who organized and led the march to the summer palace of the tzar. Of course they were't there because they were at the winter palance in St Petersburg. The people who marched thought that since they were carrying icons and singing hymns they would be safe. They made a tragic mistake. The church has canonlized them along with the royal family. The tzar's family was saintly, but did't know how to run a country. All the victums, for Christ's sake , who died under communisn have been cannonized by the church. Somewhere, someplace, there's still a Holy Russia.

Martyrdom is key in Christianity. Jesus is the ultimate martyr for Christians. The early Christians idealized martyrdom as the greatest show of faith. Political relationships with churches changed this appeal in many circles, but not all.

Many Irish monks around the 9-12th centuries agreed to avoid warfare, but wanted martyrdom. They found a version of martyrdom in exile. They left their homes, friends, and families to share their beliefs.
