What't the history on that? Is it from the bible? And are you written into a book of life every year according to it?

Greetings Buratino,
Yes Yom Kippur(Day of Atonement) is in the Bible. I believe that it is first mentioned in Leviticus 16. I would strongly recommend reading that chapter. The Day of Atonement is the day that The LORD sanctified for the children of Israel for to make an atonement for all the people, the high priest and his house, the tabernacle of the congregation, the altar, and the holy place. The LORD commanded Israel to offer sin offerings, peace offerings, freewill offerings, etc. which were to be offered throughout the year, along with the feast day offerings (Day of Atonement is one of the feasts, the feasts are mentioned in Leviticus 23 and Numbers 28,29) in their times and of course the daily offerings every day. However the Day of Atonement was a very special feast day to Israel and in God's eyes. It came only once in a year. It was THE ONLY TIME THE HIGH PRIEST ENTERED INTO THE HOLY OF HOLIES, THE MOST HOLY PLACE. This is very key. The high priest is a type of YahShua Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is now our High Priest who offered Himself for us for our atonement and entered the holiest place in heaven for us, opening the way also for us, so that through the blood that He shed for us, we now have access to enter also into the Holy of Holies, being baptized in His Spirit (see Acts 2 when the Holy Spirit was poured out). Remember the veil of the temple was rent.
"Jesus, when He had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;" Matthew 27:51
HallaluYAH!
So, the Day of Atonement was given to Israel by YahVeh God to make an atonement for them, but also and ultimately to point to YahShua, who gave Himself for our Atonement once and for all time.
Now remember the high priest went into the holiest place only once a year. The significance of this is amazing, because the holiest place is where GOD dwelt, upon the ark of the covenant and between the cherubims. So the high priest was in a way (though not fully) entering into the holiest place to see God face to face! Of course God didn't show His whole Glory to the priest (as He didn't to Moses either) for then the priest could not possibly live.
Let me also mention the two goats provided by the Israelites for a sin offering (Lev 16:5). The high priest cast lots upon the goats, one for The LORD, and one for the scapegoat. The goat on which The LORD's lot fell was offered for a sin offering. The scapegoat was presented before The LORD alive and then sent out into the wilderness.
Anyway, that is an overview of the Day of Atonement. Jesus fulfilled the Day of Atonement when He died for us as the Lamb of God. The type and symbolism is perfect and wonderful! Just another witness to the authority of God's Word!
Next month my family will be observing the Day of Atonement to remember Jesus, in the tenth day of the seventh month as is commanded in scripture. I would encourage you to observe this day wherever you are. It will be a blessing to you and most of all a blessing to The LORD!
Shalom,
Ryan Van Tress

HI, RYAN

Thanks for the above.

Our Fellowship in England
<www.marlowchristianfellowship.org>
accepts and holds God's people as special and this Sunday we are celebrating the 'Feast of Booths'. It is lightly linked to the traditional 'Harvest Thanksgiving', but the Jewish festivals have a far deeper meaning for those who want to understand deeper things.
Best wishes,
Andrew
