War on Terror: Hypocrisy or Insanity?
While in his war on terrorism U.S. President W. Bush is soliciting international support for an attack on Iraq, U.S. State Department said it would not support Putin if he attacks Chechen terrorist bases in Georgia. The U.S. also said it supports Georgia’s territorial integrity, while the same was never said in regard to Iraq. "We take strong exception to statements … by President Putin threatening unilateral action against Chechen targets on Georgian territory if Georgia does not capture and hand over Chechen fighters," the State Department said. However, unilateral action by the U.S. and Britain against Iraq is not viewed by the same standards. Furthermore, the U.S. is seeking Putin’s support to do exactly the same in Iraq. Is it hypocrisy or is it insanity? Later the U.S. hastily urged Georgia to take action and requested Russia to give Georgia some more time to carry out its military operations. Leading analysts and foreign nations accuse Bush for failing to come up with any concrete evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. His administration also failed to show evidence of terrorist support in Iraq. On the other hand, there is abundant evidence of Georgia’s support of Chechen terrorists, accounts of which Russia has recently sent to the UN to study. It also became known about the direct involvement of high-ranking Georgian officials with Chechen rebels in Pankisi, as indicated by Georgia’s former Security Minister Igor Giorgadze. He said that Georgian officials get up to $200 million from drug smuggling through the Pankisi region. There is also evidence that Chechen rebels get weapons through Pankisi from Georgia. More than 150 foreigners were kidnapped for ransom in Georgia in the last year, attributed to genuine Chechen tactics of finding cash for terrorist activities. All these events are carried out under the secret patronage of Georgian Interior and State Security Ministries. For the time being it looks like Iraq was spared from imminent attack after it allowed UN inspectors back in the country.
