Mikhail Gorbachev has formed a new political party. "The Russian Social-Democratic Party" has ben registered in 64 regions, he claimed to "Moskovsky Komsomolets".

He said that the founding of the party was necessary since neither "new liberalism" and old Communism had any to offer Russian people.

[HISTORICAL NOTE: This is the same Mikhail Gorbachev, whose rule as Gen-Sek refused to remove the "guiding role of the Communist Party" from the country's Constitution, and remained an unreconstructed Communist until the day of his resignation. He only finally resigned when the USSR was actually abolished, and he became a leader without any country to lead.]

I am scheduled to hear Gorbachev speak in Anaheim, CA on October 5. It will be interesting to hear what he has to say. I'll post the essence of his remarks here. You are correct in what you say, but he did in fact call off the KGB which ultimately led to the fall of the Soviet Union.

hiya

I don't understand exactly what you're saying... in what way did he call off the KGB? And how did that lead to the end of the USSR. From where I was sitting, he got kidnapped by a bunch of hothead Generals, who botched the whole thing up. When he was released, he found himself sidelined, and events had moved on without him.

My personal analysis of Gorbachev = Communist on a damage limitation exercise, with a good PR machine. He had no intention of dismantling either Communism or the USSR - just trying to limit the fall of communism to the edges of the "empire", but hold strong at the heart of things. I'm sure he meant well, but ultimately, he messed-up.
