Nonson, Andrei...
Russia may have legitimate claim to Alaska and the Aleuts but it seems very unlikely that the US will give them back. The same could be said to apply in Northern Ireland. It will probably never be given back to the Republic, and as part of the Good Friday Agreement, Ireland (the Republic) had to erase a part of constitution laying a claim to the North. Would Russia do the same? ( drop its claim to Alaska not mess about with its constitution ). And just how actively is Russia lobbying for the repossession of Alaska? The US would be quite happy to forget all about the 99 year lease. It also seems unlikely that the US would really co-operate given the nature of the relations between the US and Russia in the past fifty years (i.e. the Cold War) and also at the present moment with the war in Chechnya. Incidently, it's actually illegal under international law to declare war on someone. btw: Andrei, I'm Irish. Matt Matt |

I think, and hope that Russians and Americans can eventually get giid relations going. Dispid=te our differences we fought both of the world wars together and I think that we made an excellent team then, and hope that one day we can rebuild that team, although then it was out of necessity, but even today it may come out of necessity.
I still consider Russia a superpower, but in a little slump right now, just give it some time and it will come back just like it always has in the past. -Edge ------------------ "What is life without death, what is love without hate, what is happiness without sorrow, nothing" |
