Moldova Communists Consolidate Power
1 hour, 9 minutes ago

By VASILE BOTNARU, Associated Press Writer

CHISINAU, Moldova - The Communist Party consolidated its hold on power in this former Soviet republic, winning over 47 percent of contested posts for mayor and other municipal offices, according to preliminary results published Monday.

The Sunday ballot was seen as a test of how the Communists, who came to power in 2001, might fare in general elections scheduled for 2005.

The party, led by President Vladimir Voronin, already enjoyed a large majority in parliament, where it controls 70 of 101 seats.

Final results are expected Tuesday. In towns where no mayoral candidate secures more than 50 percent of the vote, a runoff vote will be held in two weeks.

The second-strongest party was the Social Democratic Alliance, which gained 19 percent of posts, while the Popular Christian Democratic Party won 8.5 percent. Other parties shared the remaining votes.

Amid widespread poverty, the Communists have won popularity for generating some economic growth and for raising pensions and paying them on time.

But the party has also isolated the country further from the West by stalling market reforms and trying to move Moldova closer to the Russian orbit. Over the past two years, strident rallies protesting the "Russification" of the country have occurred frequently.

In the capital, Chisinau, incumbent Serafim Urechean held a slim advantage — 44 to 42 percent — over his Communist rival, Transportation Minister Valeriu Zgardan. The winner will be decided in a runoff.

Commies should be shot. Survivors should be shot again. It keeps me wandering why aren't the commie parties banned at all.
Even the Islamofascists are a smaller threat to mankind than the commies.

Communist party of Moldova does not have a real revolutionary marxist programme. This is not surprisingly, since the party is controlled by former stalinist bureaucrats, who were always parasites on the planned economy and never had any intentions of realization of socialism, which can only be attained by direct participation and control of masses in running the industry.

Their programme is reformist with the idea of reforming capitalism. They have no intentions to go over to planned economy, since nowadays there is no base for creation of a degenerated workers´ state, which would enable them to play a part of parasitic caste.

Going over to workers´ democracy is thus rulled out for them, since this would mean an end to their privileges, which they have now.

They are merely a reformist capitalist party, capitalists should not fear them at all.

I totally agree with you. True marxists are always on the side of the workers.
