I too got hooked on Rand in school: read everything she wrote. However, her ideas were rejected because of their lack of discreteness. The processes she espoused are as old as man and are found in most of his literate. Selfishness for selfishness' sake does not readily lend itself to a utilitarianism. Which is basically what you said.
