Russian people to express their opinion about USA (05.10.2004)

Research holding ROMIR Monitoring carried out a poll dedicated to the attitude of the Russian citizens to the United States of America. The poll was conducted in September 2004, a total of 1500 people in 102 rural and urban settlements in all Federal districts of the RF participated.

Respondents were supposed to answer the question: «What is your opinion of the USA?»:



The poll shows that the amount of Russians who regard the USA positively (30%) is almost equal to the number of those who think about the USA negatively or somewhat negatively (35%). Around one third of the surveyed (34%) regard our neighbor-country neutrally. It might be noted that there were very few of those who did not select any answer – 1%.

Respondents were supposed to answer the question: «In general, do you think that US foreign policy affects Russia positively, negatively or not at all?»:

We see that according to more than half of the surveyed (60%), the US foreign policy influences our country negatively. The reason for such an evaluation may be overall negative attitude of the Russian citizens to the US activities in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as a number of problems in the Russian-American relations.

Although the USA is not perceived by the Russian society expressly negatively, such estimation of the foreign policy of our neighbor creates ground for anti-American sentiments.
