In CCCP days, all Arabs and Palestinians loved the CCCP because it turned the Middle East into an ammo dump. You still have enough hardware to cause problems in the world for a few more years, but I think the era of "free weapons for all" is over. Now that the old terrorist is taking a dirt nap, you might have the chance to get a real job, and trade your AK for a wrench or a pen. Your children might even have a good chance of reaching old age after a happy life.

I am confused... I was under the impression that the USSR banned the Quran, Stalin threw many Muslims in Gulags for their religion. And in the invasion of Afghanistan thousands of Muslims fled there to fight the "Atheist infidels".

True, but they also sent barge loads of ordnance to piss off the west, work out great economic deals to employ Soviet workers building infrastructure, and to reap rewards by having Middle East oil feed Soviet citizens. Since they were the only major power willing to feed weapons to the Arab world in great numbers, signing the oil contracts were a piece of cake, as there was no competition.

Of course, most of that happened before the CCCP understood that giving unemployed single minded children plenty of free guns would eventually bite the CCCP in the arse. Not only does the Russian arms industry suffer today because the Soviets gave away small arms like penny candy in the past, but the Russian population is suffering because many of those weapons are now being pointed in their direction.

The battle for oil contracts will heat up again, but it will not be the way it used to be. There is competition now, and free weapons will not be the ultimate payoff no matter who wins a particular contract.

I think Mohammadov is yearning for the way it used to be. It isn't happening, Mohammadov.

Only in one condition can the Israel and Palestinian live
side by side in peace,
that is:
both of Israel and Palestinian people treat
extremists from both side as their common enemy.
Set all those extremists to jail no matter where they
come from.

I mourn for Arafat. Although he was not evangelical, he fought for his peoples' statehood, and that is admirable (especially since Isreal was just created by a shamed world that wanted to make their guilt go away by ignoring the situation in Germany for too long). Imagine if someone tells you to get off your land (or to move over) so that someone can take what's been yours for almost a thousand years for their own. That's how Palestinians feel (if I'm not mistaken.

T-34:

"I was under the impression that the USSR banned the Quran, Stalin threw many Muslims in Gulags for their religion. And in the invasion of Afghanistan thousands of Muslims fled there to fight the "Atheist infidels".

The Southern muslim republics were allowed to keep their traditions (you can't just outright destroy a religion that fuels a peoples' life, and the soviets realized this (after Stalin)).

The Afghanistan war is proof of the media's escalating power. It was not an 'invasion', but an intervention by a government friendly to the communist government of Afghanistan. Even in the arab countries, interestingly, the people bought the whole invasion idea, and went off to fight.

We had quite sufficient oil production ourselves, thank you. It was all political (in my belief).

"the Russian population is suffering because many of those weapons are now being pointed in their direction."

That is true, but in our case, its because Chechnya used to be a Soviet republic.

gs001: Are you proposing that we throw the Israeli government in jail? And all of those Palestinian terrorist group leaders in there too? And what about funding from other Arab nations? Should America attack them all and stop the flow? I understand where you're going with this, but the fundamental problem is coming from the upper echelons of the societies, and a solution can not be that simple (the people dying are the young Isreali soldiers and Palestinian human bombs).
