Child poverty grips ex-Soviet bloc

A new report by the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) has found that 18 million children in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union are living in conditions of extreme poverty.

The report says they are existing on less than $2.15 a day - while another 60 million children and young people are living on less than $4.30.

The report looking at the situation in these regions in the 10 years since the Soviet collapse warns that the task of building humane societies has been neglected in the rush for economic growth.

"Fundamental freedoms have been recognised in most countries - the right to vote, to express opinion, to use one's own initiative and enterprise. That is undeniably a source of satisfaction," said Unicef executive director Carol Bellamy.

"But we must not forget the original goals of the transition - to raise the standard of living and to develop humane and democratic societies. These goals need to be reaffirmed."

That is full of s.hit. Democratic goals yea, yea, that will just decrease the living standart even more, because there will be other companies (from other countries) that will hold the capital, and they will rob the countries even more.

These are very, very sad pictures. Terrible.
In the Sovjetunion they would have been in school.
I am curious if Putin saw the pictures. If Jelcin saw the pictures.

All what Jelcin wanted to know is, if he gets a glass of vodka today, or no, nothing else, of course he gets it, he is president of rich people.
