It's hard to say.
I would guess they will join EU economically and militarily, but not politically. I mean they will have same tune economic policy and free trade agreement, they will have common security arrangements, but not common boarder and freedom of movement of workforce. One of the reason is that Russian boarders are huge and hard to secure. Secure boarders is one of EU prerequisites. Also, Russia is a bridge between EU and Asia, it's geopolitical position is unique and thus different from any EU country. Russia has been functioning for millenium as a European boarderguard, there might be all her problems derive from. It's probably nice to be Holland, sitting securily and cozy in the heart of Europe. Another matter having hords of Mongols devastating your country, or Muslim tribes constantly pressuring for boarders change.

Ragnavald, I have to correct you on some sentences.
For Russia, it is not good to join EU, but they 100% won´t join NATO. EU is nothing but a clean robbery. For entrance every country has to pay 300.000.000 $ or 300.000 $ (I am not 100%, but I think that second number is right), it has to exept all laws of EU, not just laws, but also limitations. Limitations like this one: Your country will get 10% of promised amount (just for first 10 years, JUST????), but it will have to pay full tax and country like that can just forget about any agriculture, which is also very important in Russia, so I think that they will never join EU. And about NATO? Even more, NEVER. For this we have one and only reson: Russia develops its own weapons like SU-37... T90.... Russia has totally different arsenal of weapons wich NATO uses, but Russia will never stop developing its own military, with its own technology!

Titoman,

The actual borders of the EU are already alike a sieve. Hundreds of thousands move into it every year without papers. Inside of the EU there are no borders anymore, so it make no difference if you are in Holland or Germany. I wonder if Russia's borders are not safer because of the distances and the lack of transportation. In the next years EU will extend to the Russian borders and most of the former USSR countries will be a part of it. I think Russia has not much choice, it will not be able to recover economically by itself fast enough to remain an outsider. Politically, all the EU countries are still independent, so I don't think it will be a problem. EU is not the USA. It is not certain that NATO will remain in its actual form: the EU wants its own army and want to become it independent from USA and NATO. If it stays out of EU, Russia will be surrounded by 3 superpowers, economically and militarily, a very large country with 140 million inhabitants between the EU (500 M), China (1200 M) and India (1000 M). SO it has the choice to be the fifth or sixth world power alone, or as a part of EU, the second or first.
