Because the cruel tyrant communists, with their hands covered in blood of the innocents could no longer abuse and exploit the people. The corrupt empire built on bones and blood of the poor ill-treated people could no longer stand in the way of glorious and righteous progress.

Why the USSR fell apart?
1 word - Gorbachev.
This idiot introduced some of the stupidest and unreasonable policies and he made communist control so weak that people were ready to start counter-revolutions against the communist government.

Nycrolite,

Wasn't every empire built on bones, blood and tears?

Roman, Mongol, Turkish, Spanish, British and American?

Yes and they all collapsed didn't they?
Though all those countries exist, they have no colonies or own lots of land.

I just said that because that's what most americans want to hear. That way, they go away and we don't have to start over any stupid arguments that we already had 50 times. Go to the bottom of the page, and list back a few, you'll see the same question asked and answered.

Empires - let's define an empire first and we'll figure it out then. If by empire we mean a big country, then yes, most big nations had to have wars and eventually collapsed. Russia is not through yet I think, it's still too big . BTW - of the top ten counries with biggest populations russia is the only one with negative growth.

HOPE??

Is'nt it true that there was a lack of hope for the future,
and when the people lost all hope for a better future they revolted? Revolting meaning lax work habits, steal from government, a discontent.
