Supposedly, the Universe is expanding, and all galaxies are receding away from each other- how then is it that OUR galaxy is expected to collide with the Andromeda Galaxy, M31, NGC 224 at some 100km/sec?

This is keeping me awake, HELP!

Is there an astrophysicist in the house?

You're kept awake by fear of the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way colliding?

Dude.

Reality.

You will be long gone.

Excuse the levity then, but the question remains- why are galaxies capable of colliding when they are supposedly all racing away from each other? Can you explain this evident inconsistency, justin?

well venator, firstly i confess my specialisation is not in astrophysics, but applied physics; therefore, dont think that my theories are 100 percent correct, they are only what my colleagues who do astrophysics tell me.
actually the word expanding is a pretty commonplace word... the way it is expanding is very complex....its like it is expanding from the "center" outwards...if you know what i mean. of course, to undertsand what is the center of the univerese is another big deal!

How do you know there is a center in the universe? Isn't that heliocentric view based on the big bang theory?

I don't really know that much about physics, and especially not astrophysics. But I posted earlier an article about a Swedish researcher who questioned the big bang theory.
It can be found here: http://www.russia.com/forums/showthr...threadid=22572

He claimed the universe is not heliocentric or "pulsating" like in the big bang theory. He proposed it's "eternal".

Btw, what do you think about string theory? Do you think it's a reasonable attempt to study our universe?
