Iter
International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is being developed by a consortium of several countries (Russia, China, EU, Japan, S. Korea, US, and India) for future production of electricity from fusion energy. It’s believed that ITER will produce at least ten times more thermal energy than the energy required to operate it, which can be converted to electricity in future power producing reactors based on fusion.
Tokamak research reactors (one by Quebec Hydro, in Canada) is based on magnetic confinement fusion research - have produced remarkable results. In 1985 - ITER was given birth by USSR President Gorbachov and US President Reagon and began collaboration among the original four parties - Japan, USSR, EU, and the USA. The physics and engineering design activities of ITER, leading to a final acceptable design was completed in 2001. I was member of the Canadian Consortium of Ontario Hydro and other firms, which bided (in 2003) for the construction of first ITER plant – either at existing Bruce or Darlington nuclear facilities. However, in 2005 – France bid for the construction of first ITER plant at Cadarache in the south of France was accepted. The construction and operation of this plant during the next 30 years is expected to cost over US$13 billion. For more information on ITER - read the links below: PLEASE SET TITLE HERE ITER |
