Russian Carmaker Creates JV with GM and EBRD

Russia's leading car maker Avtovaz, General Motors and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on Wednesday signed a general agreement to set up a joint venture that will make new Niva (VAZ-2123) offroad vehicles. The venture is to begin production in September 2002. About two years after this, the venture may expand its model range.

The $332 million venture will make about 75,000 cars per year when it reaches design capacity. GM will invest $101 million, Avtovaz will contribute about the equivalent in intellectual property, plant space and buildings, and the EBRD is to invest $40 million dollars and provide a loan for the remainder to bolster the venture's working capital. Avtovaz and GM will each own 41.5 per cent of the company and the EBRD will hold 17 per cent.

As reported earlier, the EBRD plans to divest its stake in the venture in ten to 12 years, after which Avtovaz and GM will become equal owners. GM has retained the option of taking a controlling stake in the venture if there is a change in owners at Avtovaz. The US company will be able to buy out the Russian partner at a price equivalent to the Russian contribution to the project.

Hi!

thanks for the info!
Waiting for the production to to reach the demand level.

price for one of the basic modifications is RUR 330.000,- or USD ~11.200,-

The car is produced already, but the joit-venture seems to bring a lot of enhancments. One of the major target markets btw is the South American market.

Actually, I did not see it yet off-line

New Russian vehicle

That sounds interesting,That new vehicle..But my question here is,,Can you repair it in your own garage? With regular hand tools? OR,, do you have to take it back to the dealer?I read in Readers Digest magazine some years ago that if you bought a TV in Russia the owner got a repair manuel with it and could repair it himself..I thought that was a great idea..It seems that a manufacturer would do well to try building things more simple and easy to repair at home..We once did that in this country untill recent years..if you can repair all models of autos these days you are bright enough to go to work for NASA designing space vehicles makeing a lot more from your talents.I have been fooling around with my 89 Beretta for a few days trying to replace the ignition switch..That use to be simple in 1965.

Hello justoleme

I dont know if you can repair this vehicle with regular hand tools. I suppose, yes. As any other Russian car.
Historically (), lack of normal service in Russia during the Soviet period made the whole population of the country to the technicians. Well, and the design of the cars was such ... you could fix most of the problems in the garage.

Still, a lot of people in Russia consider the time spent for reparing a car by own hands a good recreation.

About TVs - not exactly correct. Then you bought a TV set you got an electrcal scheme and an explanatory book with it. So everyone who knew a little about radioelectronics could fix the TV if it went broken. Taking into consideration the fact that historically, the lack of normal... (see above ) Of course, after the microchips became widespread, it started to be more difficult to repair the TV (unless you own a Fab30 somethere in Dresden)

Russia’s Major Carmaker to Get Back its Controlling Stock

Gazeta.Ru - Russian vice premier Ilya Klebanov told the press on Monday that the government will return the controlling stock in the AvtoVaz car making plant to the company. The draft decree on returning the shares will be presented to the government by the Finance Ministry on August 7, Klebanov said.

The decision has been taken in order to make the company more attractive to potential investors, the official said.

The controlling package of shares in AvtoVAZ (50% plus one share) was taken under government’s control several years ago at the same time as strict conditions of debt repayment wee imposed upon the company. AvtoVAZ is currently meeting all its obligations honestly, Klebanov said.

After the controlling package of shares is returned to the company, AvtoVAZ will be able to start looking for an investor. An additional flotation of shares could be made for a potential investor, Klebanov said.

new customs regulation

Mastodon

Now the g'nt plans to enter the new regulations for the imports of the used cars to Russia.

While new cars in Russia cost already 1.5 times more than in Europe, the used cars are still possible to buy.

Now, the state comission plans to implement the new taxes for the used cars older than 7 years import.
This means all the fees and taxes (54% total) are going to be calculated basis the initial car price
For example, buying the Audi80 1994 (now priced about USD 6000) will become impossible as the fees and taxes only are to form the substantial amount of more than USD10000. For the popular BMW 520i - more than USD 20000.

The experts say that the prices for the new Russian cars will grow by 30-40% as soon as such regulation will be implemented.

And, according to the gallups more than 73% of respondents prefer to chose a used western car to the new Russian.
