Creator of the first laser and one of the fathers of quantum electronics, Academician of Russian Academy of Science and Nobel prize-holder '64, Aleksander Prokhorov, died today ~8 AM.
He was 86. Needless to say that without his inventions we would not have internet, or cd-roms, or precision surgery etc. (at least, we would have it a lot later).

I think he was awarded Nobel prize for development of maser, though.
Interesting fact from his biography, he was born in Australia. How did this happen?
