Hi

I wonder if anybody knows anything about russian moon program. How has it started? What were the objectives?
And how has it ended?

And if possible, non-american accounts.
I found them extremely biased, so I don't want to waste my time reading.

Thanks

I didn't read anything about it.

Some people say that Russians didn't have moon program because of realization that space stations are gonna be more of use and practical value. Which turned true, really, as we see with ISS.

Other people said that they did have a program, but there were a lot of problems with actual space ship, and Americans made successfull launch so they ended it.

Cauze, really, moon flight was just pablicity stunt and waste of money, Cold War struggle.
Of course, very impressive technological stunt.

I've heard on TV that the whole world space exploration effort costs us 14 lives, 10 American and 4 Russians.
What casualties are you talking about?

There was an interesting documentary in uk on Soviet rocket technology. I'm not very knowledgeable about the technology, but it seems Russia was years ahead of the USA with a typr of rocket engine which recycled energy which was wasted in normal engines. I don't remember the details as this was shown about a year ago. The Soviet leaders decided to abandon the space programme and ordered the engines destroyed, but the scientists who worked on them hid them in a warehouse. Recently some American scientists who hear of these engines persuaded the Russian scientists to show them, and they were amazed that they stil existed. Now they are likely to use the technology for the next generation of engines in USA. I think I recorded that programme, so if I can find it I will try to be more acurate with the account. This doesn't explain why the Soviets pulled out of the moon race, for they clearly had the technology, but I think they felt it was too dangerous. Anyway thought you might be interested in that.

The site http://www.lostcosmonauts.com has already been mentioned on the thread 'first man in space' and highlights the early coverups in the space race. Look also here http://www.thule.org/moon.html for an examination of the possibility that the US moon landing was in fact a hoax. If that were true, much of the loss of life would have been pointless. Perhaps Russia realised the impossibility of the undertaking. I should point out that I am not convinced one way or the other yet, but given the political climate at the time, I do not find it beyond the bounds of possibility that the US could perpetrate such a hoax.
