The first glorious victory of Chechen wrestlers
Aslambek Bisultanov is the first Chechen free-style wrestler who won leading international competitions. The twice Olympic champion Ivan Yarygin says how it happened in his book “You are called on the carpet”. “Aslambek Bisultanov from Grozny won the first place in the Soviet championship in 1977 in my weight category. I was planning to take part in the European championship but I was told: “We have to test promising young wrestlers. Your task is to win the world cup in Toledo.” “Frankly speaking I watched the performance of Aslambek with jealousy. He fought with determination and won the gold medal leaving silver to Gyuchl from Turkey. His performance encouraged me and I fought toughly. I managed to defeat American Harold Smith in 27 seconds. In view of this local press said I set a world record at the world Cup by ending a fight in a shortest time.” “This was my fourth victory in the tournaments. This is a pleasant thing, of course.” But later Ivan Yarygin had to face a tough fight in the Soviet championship in Krasnoyarsk, his hoe town. This is what he writes about the competition. “People from my home town were happy that the tournament was held in Krasnoyarsk. The stadium had no vacant place. But I think that I disappointed them when I lost to young Aslambek Bisultanov from Chechnya. He was not only cunning but also faster than I was. I thought that my friend Lev Tediashvili would defeat Aslambek but he was defeated by the persistent Chechen.” “For us it was a dissapointment, of course. But the fights pleased fans by unexpected victories.” “In short, Bisultanov was sent to the world cup tournament where he won gold. This confirmed the reputation of the school of wrestling in Checheno-Ingushetia and the chief coach of the school Degi Bagaev. Two years later his student Khasan Ortsuev became world champion. And Salman Khasimikov won the this title for four times.”

Well, they do have a football team. Many players on the Afghan side disappeared in Europe.
