World Chess Championship to Be Held in Moscow
Interfax - The next men's and women's chess championships will be held in Moscow, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov said at a news conference on Thursday.
"Preliminary rounds will be held on November 24-December 11. The Men's final games will be played on January 3-13, 2002," said Ilyumzninov who is also president of the Russian internal republic of Kalmykia.
Sixty-four women and 128 men will compete for world titles, he said.
The prize is $3 million in the men's and $500,000 in the women's division, Ilyumzhinov said. Those amounts have been deposited in FIDE's accounts in Lausanne, he said.
Invitations will be sent to the best chess players of the world, notably Garri Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov, Ilyumzinov said. He hoped, but was not sure, that they would take part in the championship.
