Russian Clubs Resigned to UEFA Postponement
Reuters - Russian clubs resigned themselves on Wednesday to UEFA's postponement of Champions League and UEFA Cup matches following terror attacks in the U.S. and said they would wait patiently for their rescheduled games.
Magomed Kanayev, manager of Anji in the southern city of Makhachkala, expressed disappointment with a decision which gave a temporary reprieve to their Scottish opponents Rangers, who had been on the brink of expulsion from the UEFA Cup.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport has turned down an appeal by Rangers to play Thursday's tie in a neutral venue. Rangers have said they will not send a team to Makhachkala because of security concerns around the volatile Chechnya region.
"This is very unpleasant news," Kanayev told Reuters. "The events are of course very sad – both there and here. But we hope that the UEFA Cup matches will resume in due course."
Dynamo Moscow President Nikolai Tolstykh said his club's match against Birkirkara of Malta would now take place on September 20.
"We will be patient and wait," he said. "We understand that the situation in the world is very complicated."
