russian mountains and travelling cost

friends of mine have been to russia and told me it's unbelieveable expensive if you don't speak russian and therefore people think you're rich. can i avoid that?
and: is there any region where i can climb some mountains without being disturbed by too many poeple and which is safe, too.
would be glad about replies...
