C'mon Galena!

You and I both know that an American can't get a visa to visit St Pete for that celebration. I even thought about flying to Moscow and taking the train to SPB. But the locals are telling me that the increased police presence will keep me from getting anywhere near that city. I guess I'll just have to look at the pictures on Russia Journal Online when the slide show gets put together.

One thing I love about you Russians is the fact that you have huge balls! $1,000 USD a night for a two room apartment???? If you can get it, go ahead. Welcome to the world of capitalism.

You have a point. I asked a friend in Moscow that I will be visiting this summer about spending a few days in St. Pete, and she thought the idea was funny.

Thumbs up

Yes, it is almost impossible to find a hotel room for the period of official
celebrations (from 24 May to June 1) because
everything is booked out for numerous official delegations. However, tourist
visa is not a problem. You can book a tour to Moscow, for instance, a get an
official visa support and hotel vouchers. A tourist visa is issued for up to
30 days and it can be registered in the city of arrival (at least one night
of hotel accommodation in Moscow should be reserved). Upon arrival to Moscow
you may go to St Pete by train on your own, nobody will stop you. It is hard
to imagine how "the increased police presence will keep you from getting
anywhere near that city". Police will not catch people on streets. Russia is
a free country.Well, major attractions (including museums, etc.) could be
restricted for official delegations only. However, you will be able at least
to walk on streets. Of course, there should be crowds of visitors in the
city. As for lodging, you can try to get
a bed in a hostel or university dormitory or book a private apartment: some
travel agencies offer that sort of lodging.

If you are not keen to face the difficulties of the official ceremonial
period from 24 May to June 1, I would recommend you to visit St Pete later
in June or in July. A cultural festival will take place in St Pete in June
and July: music concerts and other shows will take place almost every day.
Situation in hotels will be much easier. InteractiveRussia offers a St.
Petersburg 300 anniversary tour for 8 days / 7 nights from June 14 - June
21, 2003. Base price from USD 1159 per person.

Best Regards, Interactive Russia stuff.
Travel to Russia - Online Russian travel agency offers unique sightseeing and adventure tours to Russia and special vacations. International airfares, hotels, visas.
