I'm going to Pyatigorsk, Russia again. Has anyone been there or wants to know anything about it? Just ask.

Next September I will be going to Russia to take a River Cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
I will be arriving on Luthansa, my friends will be arriving on British Airways, and we are supposed to meet at the Airport to take a taxi to the ship.
Could you give me some information about the best place to meet and also about taxis at the airport.
We are three ladies "almost senior citizens" and we are worried about safety.
Thank you!

Well, say exactly where you should meet. I have to meet someone there too. It is very plain around there, so there is no place that stands out in my mind. I get back the thirteenth of Sept. If you haven't left yet, I can give you a better idea then.

Well, about taxis, I don't know much about them. I can tell you my experiences. They flock you like voltures. Everyone wants to give you a ride. They will even want to carry your bags. In general, I have never had problems with them stealing or anything like that. It's best to know Russian for them. "How much does it cost?" in Russian.. and know your numbers. It maybe difficult to find someone to that speaks English. I always had my Russian speaking friend with me, so I didn't have to try to bare speaking to them to test their English. Most of the taxi driver are not "official" taxi drivers either. I road in one of the "unofficial" drivers, and he want US dollars. I would suggest to have $5's, $10, and $20's to be sure you can give him exact change. They don't have change for large bills (or for anything). You know find that out. You can't get change anywhere. For roubles, stick with 100 rouble denominations. 500 are used, but unless you are doing a big purchase they are difficult to break.

Best of luck.

Russ

You can make arrangements with the airport regarding taxis. Be very careful if you take just any cab because dire consequences can occur. You can prepay I am told, at the airport and you should only ask for cabs that are registered with the airport.

Any time you need a visa, you need to find your nearest Russian Consulate. In UK, there should be a Russian Consulate there. I found my info on the internet. Good luck.
