Hi everyone!
I was planning on going backpacking in Russia this Summer all the way from St. Petersburg to Ulan Ude and Kyzyl this summer with two friends, one of whom is a Swedish-African. I have heard that racism is quite prominant in Russia, forgive me if I have been misinformed, but would this perhaps not be a good idea? Thank you. Jacob ![]() |

Everybody will know you are foreigners, so they might think you have money. They might think that you are naive and unfamiliar with local realities and try to fool you.
There are skinheads who are very racist, but I don't know how widespread this disease is. I would think that ordinary people, especially in small towns, should not be a problem. They would be curious to see a black human being, but not aggressive. You should try to find blacks living in Russia (students, etc.) and ask them about their experience; also try to contact the embassies of African countries and ask them. |

I'll be completely honest with you. Russia is f*cking racist. You will enjoy Russia if you don't know anything in Russian language and if you are going there for NOT more than a week.
Going to Russia with a dark skin is a question of life and death. It's a risk. 50-50. Same if you are white but with less risk. It's sad but thats the truth! |
