>> View of Kremlin and big letters beneath: LENINGRAD <<

oh, prazdnichny :-)

Of course, more recent James Bond films have not done much better. "The World Is Not Enough" has the local people in the oil-producing state on the Caspian as being... Russian Orthodox? <g> The best bit in that is where the Russian Nuclear Sub is sinking, and the crew are saying things like "razre****e menya, pozhaluista.." I thought they were going to ask "a vy ne vyxodite na sleduyushy?" too - the most well-spoken sailors in the world.

Of course, Russia itself is capable of extraordinary linguistic efforts to amuse by accident. Trot-along to the Hotel Moskva, whose beautiful architechture goes so beautifully with the Monastery opposite. You'll find there's an eaterie called "Loony Restaurant". Someone really ought to tell them, shouldn't they?

But the best one of all was practically the first thing I ever saw in this country, on my very first visit. I was staying at the Hotel Leningrad (now the Hotel St Petersburg) and during my stay, the hotel was hosting a conference of experts on polymers, resins, and similar materials. There was a specially made banner in huge letters over the canopy of the main hotel entrance, which said:

HOTEL LENINGRAD WELCOMES RUBBER ENTHUSIASTS.

Talking Rubber enthusiast

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!

Now that is just too much!!!! Ha ha, I love it! Hee hee, I think there is a misunderstanding in the translation to english somewhere.

It was like when I was in Germany, I went to a luncheon at a realtive's house of my friend. The lady had some surplus napkins from a company party (she worked for the utilities there) that she used. They stated "focus on gas". After that lunch, it had my full attention

Ha ha ha...

Oh, I will have to read things carefully in Russia. Take photos, etc. Hee hee!

Thanks both of you! I really needed a good laugh today

Btw...how many people turned up for the rubber enthusiasts conference anyways?

Amy

Dear Amy/all,

Hi I'm new here, but I couldn't resist jumping in to this discussion.

I looked all over Russia for that darn park with the soviet statues in it (cos I thought it would be, like, cool), but to no avail. The one you mentioned, Dr Woland, does have a few sorry statues in it, but nothing like in the film. Bit disappointing really.

Smile My first post

Continuing on the Goldeneye theme, I've always wanted to know what the character played by Famke Janssen (I think) says whenever she was angry. It sounded something like "Bierch". I'm assumming its some sort of Russian swear word, and I apologise if it is, but what is it that she is saying?

Hi glock_girl,

Thanks for you welcome.

There is a way we can deduce what she was saying. As your in Moscow at the moment, then the next time your in the Metro, try saying it at the top of your voice, and see what the response is!!

It sounds like your enjoying it there. I liked it when I was there in December.....except it was a bit nippy! I also visited a friend in Taganrog whilst I was there. I hope to go again this year (to Russia)...and maybe even move there sometime (not sure which part).
