I am going on holiday to Russia in a couple of weeks (Moscow and St Petersberg). Looking for info on cost of living i.e. Drinks, Food Shops etc. How much is a good idea for daily expenses. Any info appreciated.

Well, that sounds like fun. I recommend getting the Eyewitness Travel Guides. I got the Moscow one, and that is great. Forget paying the bogus $20 for a tour by a British person for the Kremlin. The book has excellent pictures and desciptions. Even a good run down on some restaurants and clubs to go to.
I stayed at the Rossija Hotel, Moscow in March. I had reservations, but I tell you that it is more expensive that way. If you just go to the hotel, you will get a better rate. Rate ranged from $65 to $95. Be sure to get a superior bed. Even that doesn't match a mattress in US. Food may run from $5 to $15, or if you go to a Chinese restaurant, you may be in a big surprise. I paid $30 for a 10 piece fried pork dinner. And it wasn't even close to tasting good. You have to watch out for where you go. If it looks nice, you may get robbed. Hint: If you don't see prices on the menu, it will be expensive. The atmosphere of the place really shows how expensive it is. Another thing I suggest is not to exchange your money in a hotel. There are plenty of exchange places, just blocks away from major hotels.. that will give you a much better rate. Have fun. Things are generally much cheaper than U.S. Items may be a 1/3 to 1/2 less than U.S. things. In general, $50 a day for food and souvenieres should be enough (plenty). Any questions, just ask. I'm heading back to Moscow in Sept myself. FYI: I live in U.S. Russ |
