What's Russia like?

Hello everyone.
I'm thinking about going on holiday to Russia with my girlfriend next summer, but I have no idea whatsoever about the place. I have read another thread where somebody thinks that the police are criminals, and that I should avoid Russians in big groups! I am English and I speak no Russian (if I decide to go I will learn a few words beforehand), so I expect to have a bit of a hard time in some ways. Do you think we would be welcomed? Is crime a major problem? I am very interested in nature and scenery is there anywhere in particular you would recommend?
