Out of curiosity, what do you think the best time of year to visit Moscow would be? I'm in Denver, Colorado. I was also wondering how much money you think I'd need in pocket when I got there to make it through a week to a week and a half? Good to change money or keep some currency in dollars?

Plane tikets are less expensive in the fall and spring. As far as pocket money goes,- it varies. Russan visa will most likly cost you about 200 bucks. Hotels are more expensive if you show an american passport(in fact sometimes about 4 times as much). Everything else varies drastically. If you are serious about it, let me know, and I'll tell you the details.

Darcy,
A visa shouldn't cost that much. For a two week wait to get a visa, it cost me $70 Canadian $$ approx. It costs a little more if you want it immediately and couriered etc.

I find the best time to go to Moscow is from June to September. The weather factors heavily in determining whether you have a good holiday or not.

At the risk of sounding vain, I suggest you click on my profile, then click on the link that says "search all posts by this registered user". There you will find reams of information about travel, information, costs, accomodations and links to websites about Moscow. There has been so much posted on this subject that it seems tedious to repeat it all.

I hope this helps you.If you go to Moscow, I guarantee you, that you will fall in love with the city, history and people. <smile>

Regards,
LillyNomad

Lilly, thanks, I'll take a look around. If I had my way I'd also love to spend sometime on the Black Sea as well. Ah, wishes, wishes

FOUR times as expensive with an American passport?? Is that true? Uhg.. I wish I wasn't an American sometimes. Oh well. This trip has a long time yet in planning and an even looonger time in saving. I suppose eventually it will end up being my honeymoon.
But what an exciting honeymoon that would be! Thanks guys.

I seriously doubt that the costs will be prohibitive. Visa prices are not as expensive as you may think.

Airfare to Moscow varies too. If you fly Aeroflot it should be the cheapest. It cost me $1059.00 Canadian to fly June 01-15. That is a direct flight from Toronto to Moscow. 9 hours and two swollen ankles later, I was in the city of my dreams! Trust me, you will not regret it (even being an american) Another USA friend went there in October (from this board)and fell in love with Moscow too. It gets into your blood. You will be bitten too.

The Rossia hotel is the usual place to stay. It caters to the western crowd. Check it out. There are specials all the time through travel agencies. As a tourist you will be paying higher prices for things, but don't let that fool you. If you want to see St. Basils it will cost you a whopping $4 or $16 for ballet tickets from a scalper at the Bolshoi. Get my drift pal? The Moscow River cruise was a staggering $2. And the best for last: A 1-1/2 lovely train ride to Sergei Posad Lavra(historic Monastery and fort) outside of Moscow was a formidable $2 too.All that was 4 times the regular price.

There is so much more.

There are tons of bookmarks that I have with links to anything to do with Russia. If you want them, I will send them.

Have a good day,
LillyNomad

Travel is soooo cheap in Russia. It sooo depends on what you want. Yes, you can pay a fortune but you can also travel around for like no money at all. Don't stay at fancy hotels. Stay in obshsities (halls of residences) or goctinizies. VISA from Britain is only about $15. I don't understand why you guys have to pay so much. When you are there, eat in small cafes. Don't always go to fancy restaurants. This way you'll save money and be so much more likely to meet Russians. If travelling around Russia, use the train. Buy the tickets yourself at the station, don't buy them through an agency. This way you'll get them very cheaply. I travelled around Russia and Ukraine for two weeks to Moscow, Odessa, Krim, Kiev, Novgorod and St. Petersburg for $100 and met a lot of great Russians and Ukrainiens while being on the train. Travel the right way in Russia and it's cheap and very friendly
