I am traveling to Russia in a few months and need to know what the electrical standards are. I'm assuming it is AC and 220 Volts. What is the cycle frequency? I would also like to know the telephone standards. Can any one help me? Thanks.

You're right, it's approx 220-240v, AC - if you are using any sensitive equipment take a surge-protector, voltages move around quite a bit during one evening!!

The russian phone-jack is a five-pin affair, in the shape:

You can easily buy an adaptor from Russian jack-shape to RJ-11 for under a dollar at Moscow markets. The best one for electrical stuff like this is at metro Bagrationovskaya. The regular stalls are open 7 days, but at the weekends it turns into Moscow's biggest boffin-market, plus cd's, cd-roms and lots of other stuff. You could probably get an adaptor any day of the week, though. If you are using a laptop, remember to change your dial-up properties to Pulse Dial!! If you need to get on-line, easiest/cheapest option is cityline.ru, you buy a prepaid phonecard good for x number of hours on the net, from any branch of Gutabank. In St Pete's, the equivalent service is "Admiral", same kind of rates apply.

Good luck!

Neil
