The Polish trains are quite good, and still are State-subsidised non-commercial prices, so quite cheap. I've taken the Warsaw-Petersburg train myself.
Departure time used to be 00:47 from Warszawa Wschodniya station, time en-route about 32 hours (you MUST get a Belarus Transit Visa before you travel - the line goes through this way, they re-routed it when Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania demanded visas from Russians). Arrival early in the morning in St P!
Comfy accommodation, used to cost about $60 in second-class sleeper compartment.
Alternatively, head north to Tallinn, and take the night train from there - 6 hours, $25.
Enjoy!
