Russian Ethnographic Museum - Venture Through Russia's Cultrural Heritage

Opened to the public in 1923, the Russian Museum of Ethnography is an interesting look in the various ethnic cultures of both Russia and a number of neighboring countries. It is one of the country’s largest and richest museums and it houses more than 472 000 items relating to culture, religion, music and folklore. Of these, roughly 460 000 are considered to be incredibly rare. If you want to take a journey into the history and culture of the various ethnic groups of Russia, the Russian Ethnographic Museum is a must-see attraction.

The Russian Museum of Ethnography, which is located in St Petersburg, explores the culture of over 150 different ethnic groups. The displays are an interesting mixture of artifacts, music, folklore, clothing and other items unique to the various cultures. The museum aims to help people better understand their origins in a lively and appealing way. The museum has its origins in special Edict No. 420 which was issued by Emperor Nicholas II. By means of this edict, he established the Russian Museum of Emperor Alexander III which featured an Ethnographic Department. Essentially the museum was dedicated to the study of the many different ethnic groups and tribes which had settled on Russian land who had been successfully ruled over by Alexander III. In establishing the museum, Nicholas II made a public display of his intentions to continue many of the policies which Alexander III had pursued. The Russian Ethnography Museum was thus a rare mixture of science, history and culture – a mixture which helped the Russian government better understand the people of the land in order to effectively rule over it.

Today the Russian Museum of Ethnography is a non-profit federal establishment that focuses on the many different cultures which have influenced Russia’s history. The museum features a large number of interesting exhibitions, as well as a variety of interesting activities which helps to keep many of the students and children who visit interested in their cultural heritage. The museum features a folk group theatre, a shop, a lecture hall, a café and internet access. It currently employs roughly 80 curators as well as over a hundred other members of staff who help to keep the establishment running smoothly.
