Russian Sport Activities

It would be easy to spend several decades getting to know Russia's great cities alone, but visitors should know that there is far more to do in today's Russia. Much of the country consists of spectacular and nearly virgin terrain and this makes Russia the dream destination for an adventurous traveler. In the last few years the Russian government has opened up enormous areas that were previously closed to virtually all human visitation for decades. For the truly intrepid, Russia presents a lifetime's worth of unexplored territory.

For those who prefer to spend their time relaxing, there are plenty of places to visit that are within striking distance of a comfy hotel or even a river boat cruise. But for those who have a preference for the more exciting outdoor adventures there are guided tours for almost anything, including river rafting, hunting, fishing, ice-diving and even 4X4 jeep trails. Russia is also home to a number of keen sporting enthusiasts. In fact, the country has been internationally successful at a number of sports and it continuously finishes in the top tend at the Olympic Games.

Though Russians play a lot of football, their chances of becoming a leading figure in the world scene were reduced by the break-up of the USSR. On the other hand, ice hockey has gained a lot of popularity amongst locals and today it is one of Russia's most played sports. Russia has even gained success in this sport at world and Olympic levels.

Another sport which has cast Russia into the international spotlight is that of tennis. Russia is home to a number of famous tennis players including Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Anna Kournikova and Maria Sharapova, the winner of the 2004 Wimbledon women's title.
